Last Monday we said goodbye to our home of almost 9 years, a momentous event, even though we are returning in a year. It is the only home my kids have ever known, and the house I have lived in longer than any other in my entire life. And these past 9 years have been big ones, what with the having children and raising them thing.
Isaac chose to say goodbye to the house by kissing every object he could think of. While I don’t deny this display served a purpose, in soon developed into a performance for entertainment’s sake, especially once Felix got involved by suggesting more and more items for Isaac to kiss, and laughing in appreciation each time a kiss was doled out. Here Isaac is kissing the pocket door we only ever pull out to show guests how cool it is. Clearly an item worthy of a goodbye ritual.
The tears and deeper feelings came when we said goodbye to the cats. They got kisses too, but my camera ran out of juice so I have no photographic evidence.

Almost all of our belongings went to the attic, leaving the attic like this:
And the rest of the house like this:
We managed to fit all of the items we are bringing to Spain into 6 suitcases and 6 carry ons.
Not too shabby.
As we left the house, what I primarily felt was relief. We were finally done with packing up and cleaning the house, and with planning the logistics of our transatlantic move. The boring part was done, now it was time for the adventure! On the way to the airport, Tyler recited the above Gandolf quote to the boys (they have been reading the Hobbit) and asked them how they were feeling about leaving on our adventure. Isaac said he felt “slightly heroic”. I think we all feel that way.
