En route, I pick up a guy’s wallet—I see it fall from his pocket—and return it. I have to shout at him three times to get his attention. I get it. He looks at the wallet blankly, like it’s see through and there’s something behind it, quite a ways behind it, and then he looks blankly at me for four or five seconds, and then he thanks me very slowly and profusely. His buddy is less profuse but more excitable. They’re English. We conduct the conversation in English. Till the end when the buddy asks, “Quieres un cigaro?”
Wrenched back, spent legs, pained arches, and strained neck go first to Daphni.

Shows start at 4. Till 8:45, the music is music I am kinda, sorta interested in, but not interested in enough to leave the house.
The only lines I ever stand in are the Panda Bear-lines on the first day. But there is a wait at the entrance today when the guy walking in in front of me has his bag checked for alcohol. The security guard points to the bottom of the bag. The man says, “Sweater.” (Like nearly every official exchange I hear at Primavera, this one occurs in English.) The guard has him pull the sweater out. The man uses two hands and pulls out a sweater in the shape of a 40 oz bottle. “Sweater?” “Oh. Oh.” First, there’s a reading group on the text of this lecture. It’s 30 pages. Should I carry it to the festival and then carry it around? I already have an old Kindle jammed into my pants pocket. And a rolled up, thin plastic water bottle. And a wallet. And keys. And a paper copy of the list of showtimes taped back-to-back with a map of the venue. And my notebook and a pen. (How else would I remember the festival?)
I bin the lecture and, free of it, figure I have no worries. I can wait! Show up to the festival at a not-particularly-early time. It’s Spain! So I have a sandwich with Paul and a great talk with him and his student about the lecture and an idea Paul tells me about according to which doctors should pitch in and clean up hospitals occasionally. (Paul cautions that this is not part of a general job switch: Janitors should not do surgeries any more than philosophers should be given a turn driving school buses or baristas given a turn to fly for United. There is something about this that sustains me through the whole festival. I still laugh thinking about it.) Buoyed, I get on the metro and go the three stops to El Maresme. There is no need to know how to get there. I follow the young people. I have a paper ticket. That gets me a wristband and a plastic card that has something—what?—to do with re-entering the festival. Parrots live here. Felix and I snapped these just outside of Camp Nou while Felix ate Ben and Jerry's for the first time in ten months. (There's a Ben and Jerry's in the Camp Nou complex.)
The lovely St Antoni library, squished between apartment buildings, looking out on a park+playground, featuring a dictionary in the kids' philosophy section (hence, featuring a kids' philosophy section), and, like some of the other beautiful libraries here, not featuring all that many books.
