When we first started thinking about our move to Spain, Halloween was a not insignificant consideration. It is a BIG holiday in our house, and the thought of moving to a country that does not celebrate it was a definite con. Costumes + candy = win win. (For three of us anyway, and Tyler is good natured enough to go along for the ride.) Tonight Isaac and Felix and I attempted to rank our favorite holidays. While Christmas and Easter beat out Halloween on Isaac and Felix's list, Halloween may win by a nose on my list. As such, we certainly were not looking forward to a year without Halloween. |
Luckily enough, there was plenty of Halloween celebrating to be had. The night before Halloween a group of Americans who lived close to us organized trick or treating and provided everyone with a map of the apartments to hit. Isaac and Felix were both dressed up as elves from the Lord of the Rings. It was fun to ride the subway in full elfin gear. After trick or treating we stopped at Burger King for dinner, because why not eat American fast food after celebrating an American holiday in Spain. | Since the boys go to the American School of Barcelona, they were also able to celebrate Halloween at school. Kids were invited to wear their costumes to school and were able to participate in Halloween themed activities. And the end of the day each class paraded in front of the school to show off their consumes. This was fun for me to watch, because it reminded of similar parades I had participated in when I was in elementary school. During a 2 week dance unit in PE, Isaac had learned part of the dance from the Thriller video. He, along with all the other 3rd -5th graders, his PE teacher and some additional teachers, performed this in front of the school. We were then treated to various performances from the high school students. It was an EVENT. Safe to say we did not have to skip Halloween this year. |
